There is nothing quite like a pairing of black and white. Opposites attract. However it is this unlikely pair that can often create the biggest impact in terms of a fashion statement.
Some tend to think black and white are being boring, monochromatic and lacking depth. This cannot be further from the truth. I am one of the biggest advocates for black and white outfits. Not only are the colours crisp, clean and simple, but black and white both exuberate elegance and sophistication.
My picks for a Spring/Summer wardrobe include a range of black and white, but in many different fabrics and materials.
The thing I adore about black and white, particularly at the moment, is that people are pairing edgy, rough cuts of leather and stiff materials, with soft laces, flowing fabrics and patterns. Black and white can go with anything really, which is why it is always vital to have a few black and white garments tucked away in your wardrobe, to be matched with anything from bold colours, to floral prints and patterns.
Whilst we all have that go-to ‘little black dress’, the same cannot be said for white. It takes guts to wear all white, but if done correctly, all white can be a standout at any social gathering. One of my favourite looks from this past Spring and going into Summer is the midi A Line skirt (see Sportsgirl PU Party skirt). In a move that takes us back to the 50s, the midi is not only excellent in terms of being versatile, but it is also practical for everyday outings, and provides those of us who are less confident a look that is both feminine and comfortable.
Structured dresses are also a must. Black and white can get tedious, so character outfits that have interesting cuts, angles and materials can create the drama we all look for in an outfit. (See Alice McCall She Said She Said Dress from David Jones)
Black and white are also the easiest, in my opinion, to accessorise. Try a chunky necklace over a simple black dress, or layering bracelets for a bit of colour and pizzazz.
The saying “less is more” certainly applies to monochromatic, black and white outfits. Let the simplicity and timelessness of the colours take control, don’t try to over accessorise or do too much with what you have. When in doubt, you cannot go wrong with a bright red lippy to complete the look of a black or white outfit! Not only does it give you colour, but it looks crisp and is a bold standout against the timidness of white and black.
